Voice over IP (VoIP) is the delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet and is the basis for unified communications applications. Cisco's IP phone system of voice, video, mobility, and IP communications offerings delivers the technology for building a centralized cohesive network that can handle multiple types of traffic concurrently. Cisco allows this capability while maintaining a high level of network resilience, Quality of Service (QoS), and security.

A primary advantage of Cisco's IP phone system is its ability to help reduce costs because telephone conversations travel across the data network rather than the phone company's services. IP telephony encompasses the entire range of VoIP enabled services including the interfacing of phones for communications; associated services such as invoicing and dialing plans; and basic capabilities such as group calls, transfer, call forwarding, and call hold that a traditional PBX can supply. A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) makes connections among the internal telephones of an organization and also connects them to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) via trunk lines. An IP-PBX can exist as physical hardware, or can carry out its functions virtually, performing the call-routing activities of the traditional PBX or key system as a software system.

There are numerous variations available to businesses, such as VoIP PBX, Hosted PBX, Hosted IP PBX and more.  What is right for your business will depend on your current infrastructure, budget and requirements.
